After two glorious years renting a space in Mentmore Studios, Naoki Kawamoto ( right ) has decided to move back to Japan. A graduate from the Royal College of Art in Industrial design engineering, a master at model making and great person to have in the studio, he is keeping one foot in the UK by setting up a design company with Rodrigo Solorzano ( left ).

On one for his last hours in the country, I managed to grab a few minutes with them both before he flew off back home. See you on your return Naoki ...

SIXTH FORM

The last couple of weeks have seen me visiting Highgate Wood School in North London to document the everyday of the sixth formers who attend.

It felt slightly odd at first being "back at school" but soon got into the swing of the chaotic six period lesson timetables, school dinners, strange aroma's from bio to ill fragrances and being called 'sir' by the students was very strange but I embraced it never the less.

Towards the end of the assignment I found myself so used to the school environment that I got back into that mind set of longing for period six to come so I can go home, the day is done . . . but when it arrived, it was only 15:30pm . . . back to the studio then!

RESULT'S DAY

Highgate Wood School - 10am

We all remember that moment of slowly ripping the envelop open and pulling out those carefully folded A4 pieces of paper with our GCSE results on. Amongst the highs and lows, this image sums up that split second just before your brain processes your results.

Being there brought it all back to receiving mine 10 years ago: I ran straight home, up the stairs, leaving my mum down stairs nervously waiting, closed the door, sat on my bed and waited. I had this vision that all the results on the sheet of paper were revolving like a casino game and that when I opened the envelope, they stopped.

RECENT EVENTS IN HACKNEY

Friday 5th August 2011 was just the start of a weeklong rioting surge from youths across the UK. What started off as a gathering of people outside a police station requesting answers about the death of Mark Duggan who was shot by police officers the previous day, turned into frustration, rioting, looting and rage.

The images above are from events that unfolded on Monday 8th August. I popped out to grab a late lunch from the local bakery and noticed several riot vans making their way down Mare Street.

In the bakery, I mentioned to the lady serving me that there were quite a large number of riot vans in the immediate area, and that she might be safer closing up for the afternoon to avoid the trouble. As several more riot vans passed the shop window, she responded her husband wanted them to stay open. With raised eyebrows, I told her to stay safe.

On my way back to the studio there was a strange calmness in the air, very still, not many people around. On my return to the studio, a friend announced that Hackney Central was on fire. I grabbed my cameras and ran down.

I decided to call it a day after taking the picture of the youth looking straight into the lens as he ran straight towards me with a rock.

Great Assignment to be involved in.

It started with a fifteen minute window to get Ron Arad's Portrait at his studio . . . then onwards to Paul Cocksedge Studio to make Paul sit still for more than one minute, and then back to my studio for the calm atmosphere of shooting a still life of the "Record Speaker".

Details below of the event at The Roundhouse.

During a live performance to music, designer Paul Cocksedge will be heating and moulding old LPs to give them new life as vinyl speakers that amplify music from smartphones. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own 12" records to see it transformed into a unique object. Speakers will be available to buy at the event.

This event forms part of Bloomberg Summer at the Roundhouse, during which internally re-nowned artist, architect and designer Ron Arad will create a unique installation for the iconic London building - Curtain Wall.

GOODWIN - HULL WORLD CUP FESTIVAL - 2011

Hull might not have a premiership football team - but it does have its own World Cup Festival! On Sunday July 10th, 32 teams representing the 32 different nation communities that live in Hull took to the field to contest the Goodwin Hull World Cup with Iraq beating the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final.

Amongst documenting the general event as it happened, I took the opportunity to grab a few portraits of the players.

The prints are finally done!

Seeing as I chose to shoot the referee series on black & white film, I thought it would be appropriate and respectful to get them printed traditionally. Hand crafted on the classic Ilford Multigrade IV fiber based paper by a guy who printed for the photographers at Magnum, I knew they were going to look great. And they do . . .

Preparations for the exhibition has started to roll a little bit faster . . . please stay tuned.

SESTOSENSO - MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2011

During Salone del Mobile 2011, I was commissioned by Paul Cocksedge Studio who joined forces with BMW and FLOS to create, SESTOSENSO, a celebration of light.

Inspired by the quality and beauty of light and the astonishing new BMW 6 Series, the first BMW with Full-LED headlights, Paul Cocksedge has erected a seamless, curving, white wall extension to the Flos showroom and low-hanging red and white conical lamps. As with the BMW headlights, the source of light remains hidden, only the light itself is guided through a transparent body, rendering the light source invisible and forever changing its qualities. The resultant, intensely soft light caresses, seduces all around.

Stepping inside one of the impressive SESTOSENSO red lights, a video of the BMW 6 Series Coupe reveals itself on the vast white wall. As if accessing a sixth sense, there is a hint of movement in the corner of the eye. Through the light we see the car: through the car, we understand the light.

The playful sculptural pieces softly illuminate, stimulate and allow contemplation. Cocksedge gives us elegant, 'functional brilliance'.

Apologies for my lack of posting . . . the last couple of weeks has taken me to the Milan Design Festival to document: "Sestosenso", a luminary apparition by Paul Cocksedge Studio. A Collaboration with German car company BMW and Italian lighting company Flos to show the new BMW 6 series car. STAY TUNED.

WEEK FIVE gives you a slight insight to the newly built South Marsh building (top) and the very old North Marsh changing rooms (bottom).

I envisage this series of portraits exhibited amongst the North Marsh changing rooms as a tribute to it's existence before its re-built. Placed amongst the showers, corridors, sinks and even toilets would not just be very suitable but I think also a very realistic and personal experience. I would like to think that it would become a visual reminder of how important referees are to the game . . . at all levels.

Here is a teaser image for you all. John Griffith was refereeing a cup game which went into extra time, then penalties. This was the only game left playing on the East Marsh playing fields, Hackney Marshes on Sunday 13th March.

WEEK THREE of the Referee portraits was a very drizzly and wet sunday morning. I spent some of this time looking around the North Marsh changing rooms in amazement as it feels like one has gone back in time.

Soon to be re-built into a modern version of itself, I am planning to gain access and capture its nostalgic aesthetics and present them as accompanying pictures along side the Referee portraits.

Hackney Marshes is one of the most famous playing fields for Sunday League Football in London. It is also where I have played football since an early age.

Over the years I have noticed that each referee has a unique way of handling the game. Whether due to differences in character, age, weight, manner or how seriously they took the game, there was always something individual about each one that caught my attention.

My idea is to take formal portraits of each referee, either before the game commences, at half time and/or after the game. Situated on the playing fields, the portraits will be constructed there and then.

Lights went out across the world last night to mark Earth Hour, the biggest ever mass event to highlight public concern over climate change. Global landmarks from Australia to China, Egypt, France, Britain and America went dark for an hour at 8:30pm local time.
